Preschool Screening

Ashten with his report card. He did not want to leave the testing, he had so much fun! We've noticed that Ashten has had some problems learning the names of colors. At first we checked with Doctor Naylor at his three year check up. He decided that Ashten isn't color blind, (which I thought was the problem) and that he probably just isn't interested in them right now. He also has some problems with his speech, so we decided that we would check out Child Find a preschool program run through the school district. After months of waiting, we finally had our screening appointment this morning. Ashten did awesome, I am so proud of him. There were several different tests in the following categories: Vision, Hearing, Motor Skills, Language, and Learning. In the learning section, he obviously failed the colors test but other than that he passed each test in the section. The teacher even had him do some tests for kids ages 6-7 years old which he got 100% right. The teacher liked him so much and thought that he was so cute that she told me she wished we lived in her area so he could come be a peer role model at her school. In the motor skills, the teacher had him do four year old testing and he also did perfect. I felt so silly taking him in after watching him pass each test time, but at the same time I feel so relieved to know that his speech is great for his age and his colors just need to be worked on more. I will be honest though, I had high hopes of sending him on the school bus to "free preschool" four days a week.

That's great news! I have to remind myself all the time that all kids learn at different levels and stages. Kennedy has a firm grasp on colors, shapes (and anything princess!), but she really struggles on letter and number recognition. It's hard as a parent to see this and not compare your child to others. Eventually they all catch up. Don't feel silly for being a concerned mom. There are probably more moms that should show more concern. Glad he's so SMART!

You crack me up! Are boys really supposed to be concerned with colors at three years old...my husband still can't match his clothes half the time...ha ha jk well kinda. It's prob cuz your first is a genius and this one is gifted, poor you! I have learned that they do all really learn when they are ready, all on different time tables. And when one may be brilliant at one area yet other things are harder to grasp the kid next to him could be just the opposite. Who's to say what is normal anyways huh? What may be normal for one could be completely different for another...it all equals out in the end in some shape or form depending on what their talents are. On a side note, you are a very cute concerned mom, good for you.
